About this discipline

The second year is a pivotal year in a young student’s study career. The choice of study can be leading for their further study programme throughout secondary education. During this year the focus on study attitudes will be reinforced. The pupils receive a general offer of 27 class periods. Based on the idea of talent development, we offer 4 “basisopties” (electives) of 5 hours each from which they can choose.

The 4 basisopties (electives) offered by GO! Royal Atheneum Antwerp are:

  • Modern Languages – Science
  • STEAM – Sciences
  • Economy & Organisation
  • Society & Well-being

The structure of the curriculum enables all possible further choices of study in the 2nd grade, regardless of the pupil’s choice (elective). A specialised team of teachers guides the students during this process.

Modern Languages – Science

Students with a broad interest in both language and science will find this option an ideal match. You will strengthen your communication skills and explore the fascinating similarities and differences between languages and cultures. We regularly put on our creative hats to discover how surprising and fun language can be. Are you also curious about the scientific world around you? This basic option focuses on inquiry-based learning. Through experiments and lab work, we try to critically examine and explain scientific phenomena.

STEAM -Sciences

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics. We offer every student more challenges in science, math, engineering and technology. Through inquiry-based learning, we delve into the wonderful world of science. Through design-based learning, we challenge our students to think like a true engineer.

Economy & Organisation

The first year lays the foundation for economic awareness. Attention to socioeconomic aspects on the one hand and more conscious choices and critical attitude towards market offerings and commercial messages on the other hand, develop understanding of consumption behavior, income generation and financial products to estimate short and long term budgetary consequences.

Society & Well-being

Man and Society is an introduction to the more humanistic disciplines. We work with themes such as politics, psychology and sociology. Based on the vision of “learning to live together”, students are also introduced to the subject of citizenship, which is taught from the second high school onwards.
